Help costs money

Medycyna Praktyczna, April 1, 2022

A mobile X-ray apparatus for use in non-hospital conditions costs almost PLN 300,000. For an external stabilization kit you have to pay over PLN 30,000, and first aid kits are available for about $100 (PLN 427). Thanks to our contacts, we make purchases for Ukraine a bit cheaper, but the expenses are still huge and the needs are not diminishing.

We donated one portable X-ray machine a week ago, for use in frontline conditions. Thanks to this machine, doctors can undertake surgical treatment of the wounded before transport to the hospital. We will send the second one to Ukraine next week. As soon as the appropriate amount is collected on the collection account, we will buy a third. Through these donations, we will meet the needs of Ukrainian military surgeons who asked us for these devices that were extremely helpful in the war.

External stabilization kits are always a necessity, to enable the fixation of bone fragments without the need to directly intervene in the fracture site. They last for 1.5-2 months, and can be reused after sterilization. However, as doctors inform us, the number of injured people is enormous, and patients cannot wait. We work with a manufacturer who can supply us with six stabilization kits per week, at a cost of approximately PLN 233,000.

Tens of thousands of first aid kits, occlusive and hemostatic dressings are needed. The supplier from whom we order first aid kits knows their destination and sells them to us at a large discount: we pay $48 instead of $100.

The next shipment to Kharkiv is packed. We divided it into two parts. Medical supplies go directly to hospitals, and Caritas-Spes - a charity organization of the Latin-rite Catholic Church in Ukraine that works for the benefit of the civilian population - will receive orthoses, wheelchairs and crutches.

Next week, another shipment with equipment ordered by military surgeons will go to Lviv. This equipment is distributed by the central military hospital and will go to military units in Kharkiv, Kiev and mobile surgical units.

Collection status on April 1 at 2:00 p.m. is PLN 1,017,480.57.
